Someone asked me the other day if I believed that the universe was conscious. I told him, “Yes.” I didn’t give much of an explanation.
It appears we humans have been able to crack some of the cosmic code. I expect that scientists, mathematicians and philosophers will continue progress toward greater and greater understanding about our world, our place in the universe, and ourselves. From the most minute detail in a microcosm of cellular existence to the macrocosm of the universe, it seems that infinity may be mirrored in the deepest structure of both the tiniest particle to the largest imagined facet of our universe. Other universes may exist right along with ours, but it is possible that the same laws of physics and mathematics could apply to them.
What is that “deepest structure?” Is it a consciousness that can translate to our physical world and universe using the very same laws that hold the universe in perfect alignment in order for us to exist? Is it energy at its most
supreme level? Is that the connectedness that can tie the material universe to metaphysical understanding -- to beyond physics?
Consciousness is multi-dimensional and some of us see and experience only the material universe. This can include contemplating varying religious tenets from differing religions. But when humans can, at will, soar in consciousness to contemplate the structure of universes, to continue the quest for more knowledge about themselves, to explore mind as apart from the brain makes me confident that we shall continue the ongoing process for unlimited time (earth time as we see it now). We are programmed, somehow, for this process.
My individual contemplation of the universe includes a Science-a science of all sciences that is mirrored here on earth and thoughout the universe. Every grain of sand, every rock and pebble, every ocean, every wave, every human being is part of the scientific universe held in place by energy forces that are meaningful and precise to its system. One step above the consciousness levels just mentioned, would be to think that, just as some are beginning to study how the mind stands apart from the brain, the Science of all sciences is actually not material at all, but spiritual. If this is the case, and Science itself is self-organizing, moving, working, and absolute, then the material universe, including humanity, mirrors that Science in biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics -- all systems we see here on earth. Natural science, I propose, is a result of a conscious universe translated to the human level. Natural science, then, seen in its perfection is actually spiritual. This includes humanity and it is a wonder that we can contemplate this at all. I see that ultimate Science, not to be worshiped, but as perfection and as good, regardless of the fluctuations and the chaos we see on this material plane. All of these aberrations, I contend, are part of that difficult process of finding out who we are and why we are here. We have been working this out since the ancients began the quest, and we will continue until we are satisfied with what we find.
