Someone asked me the other day if I believed that the universe was conscious. I told him, “Yes.” I didn’t give much of an explanation.

It appears we humans have been able to crack some of the cosmic code. I expect that scientists, mathematicians and philosophers will continue progress toward greater and greater understanding about our world, our place in the universe, and ourselves. From the most minute detail in a microcosm of cellular existence to the macrocosm of the universe, it seems that infinity may be mirrored in the deepest structure of both the tiniest particle to the largest imagined facet of our universe. Other universes may exist right along with ours, but it is possible that the same laws of physics and mathematics could apply to them.

What is that “deepest structure?” Is it a consciousness that can translate to our physical world and universe using the very same laws that hold the universe in perfect alignment in order for us to exist? Is it energy at its most
supreme level? Is that the connectedness that can tie the material universe to metaphysical understanding -- to beyond physics?

Consciousness is multi-dimensional and some of us see and experience only the material universe. This can include contemplating varying religious tenets from differing religions. But when humans can, at will, soar in consciousness to contemplate the structure of universes, to continue the quest for more knowledge about themselves, to explore mind as apart from the brain makes me confident that we shall continue the ongoing process for unlimited time (earth time as we see it now). We are programmed, somehow, for this process.

My individual contemplation of the universe includes a Science-a science of all sciences that is mirrored here on earth and thoughout the universe. Every grain of sand, every rock and pebble, every ocean, every wave, every human being is part of the scientific universe held in place by energy forces that are meaningful and precise to its system. One step above the consciousness levels just mentioned, would be to think that, just as some are beginning to study how the mind stands apart from the brain, the Science of all sciences is actually not material at all, but spiritual. If this is the case, and Science itself is self-organizing, moving, working, and absolute, then the material universe, including humanity, mirrors that Science in biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics -- all systems we see here on earth. Natural science, I propose, is a result of a conscious universe translated to the human level. Natural science, then, seen in its perfection is actually spiritual. This includes humanity and it is a wonder that we can contemplate this at all. I see that ultimate Science, not to be worshiped, but as perfection and as good, regardless of the fluctuations and the chaos we see on this material plane. All of these aberrations, I contend, are part of that difficult process of finding out who we are and why we are here. We have been working this out since the ancients began the quest, and we will continue until we are satisfied with what we find.

Hello Ellie 33,
Thank you for your thoughtful comments. Yes, MBE did write what you described and I feel certain she would expect deep commitment for research in every age where it concerns our human and spiritual progress. Einstein once said,... "something deeply hidden had to be behind things." (...from an article in World Book) This same article tells us he never believed this universe was one of chance and chaos.

Stephen Hawking has much to offer concerning the cosmos. Paul Davies wrote THE MIND OF GOD which discusses the suggestion of parallel universes briefly. Look these people up on the internet! Write again! mjcl

Re: Ex Christian Science

I think Mary Baker Eddy was ahead of her time and much of what she wrote has been wrongly interpreted. I feel rather sure that she would embrace the exponential progress in science and technology and, in my opinion, would be able to realize the natural relationship between CS and the scientific community of today-in other words, that science and religion CAN exist as one reality.

Thank you so much for that interview on Writers' Block. I will get to the Toadstool book store tomorrow for your book!! My husband and I were thrilled to hear you and find out about your book.

One of my problems with the CS church of today is its rigidity. It has not acknowledged that our time is different from MBE's era and much has been learned and discovered. The church remains largely in the 19th century and the Reading Rooms can be looked upon as mind control when nothing but "authorized literature" can be on its shelves.

It is impossible to have a real discussion with a Christian Scientist because flexibility is certainly discouraged when it comes to exploration of anything medical or anything to do with what is termed as "matter." I had to absolutely take myself in hand and leave the church when I saw people in terrible conditions and denying what was so obvious. Because of their belief they could not let themselves be treated any other way-or, if they did, the guilt was terrible. The church will say they don't tell people not to use medical help if they want to do so, but everything within the organization frowns on "going medical."

I have seen family members depressed and die because they did not ever realize the help that could be utilized right along with their prayers. I have seen families torn apart with worry when one of the parties has such conviction that no one can invade his/her CS stance. I have seen mind-sets so strong that there can only be tunnel vision.

When a person sets himself/herself up as being spritual enough to have all the answers, it really bothers me when that person becomes human and succumbs to all the foibles of us all-all the while proclaiming the "Truth."

I guess you can see that I have been angered, but, much less so, at this stage of my life. I am so happy to be able to make up my own mind, to follow where my intelligence will lead me, to enjoy my decisions, and to still feel happy with the Intelligence that I feel holds this universe in place. The evil we see, the wars, etc., will take a back seat someday as we progress, haltingly, toward the convergence of science and spirituality in some distant future. Actually, it may be the only way we will escape annihilation. mjcl
